Charles W. “Bill” Pitts was raised in a small Alabama town and attended Auburn University.
He was commissioned a 2d Lt. in the Air Force and went to pilot training at Craig AFB, Selma, AL.
Following graduation, he was assigned to the OV-10 Bronco and went to Vietnam as a Forward Air Controller.
Upon return, he was a T-38 Instructor Pilot for four years.
After a short stint outside the cockpit, he was assigned to his dream airplane, the A-10 Warthog. He flew the A-10 in multiple locations over the next nearly 14 years.
He commanded the 76th Fighter Squadron in the 23rd Flying Tiger Wing from which he was promoted to Colonel.
His final assignment was as Inspector General for the Air Force Reserve.
He retired after nearly 26 years with approximately 4,500 flying hours. He ended his working years flying for United Parcel Service and as a business executive with his wife Ruthanne in the world of commercial office furniture and interior products.
